As I sit here at 5am, cradling my precious daughter in my arms, I am overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of emotions that wash over me. Becoming a mother has been a life-altering journey, one that has recently taught me an invaluable lesson: the power of vulnerability.

Before my little one entered this world, I thought I had life sort of figured out. I had always been the type to put on a brave face, to carry my burdens in silence, and to project an image of strength and composure to the world. Vulnerability was a concept I had avoided like the plague, as if it were a sign of weakness. But motherhood has a funny way of shattering your preconceived notions and pushing you beyond your limits, both physically and emotionally.

The moment my baby was placed in my arms for the first time, I was struck by a wave of vulnerability like I had never experienced before. In that instant, I realised that I was responsible for this tiny, fragile life, and I had no idea what I was doing. The sleepless nights, the constant worry, the struggles of breastfeeding, and the uncertainty of it all made me feel more vulnerable than ever. I felt like I was navigating uncharted territory without a map or a guide.

It was during those late-night feedings recently, when I would cradle my baby in my arms and tears would stream down my face, that I began to understand the true power of vulnerability. In those moments of exhaustion and doubt, I realised that it was okay not to have all the answers, not to be perfect, and not to have it all together. I learned that it was okay to ask for help, to lean on others, and to share my fears and insecurities.

It was in my vulnerability that I found strength. When I opened up to my "new" mum friends about my fears and anxieties, I discovered a level of support and understanding I had never known before. I realised that by being vulnerable, I was inviting others into my world, allowing them to share in the joys and challenges of motherhood. I found comfort in the knowledge that I was not alone, that other mothers had felt the same way, and that there was a vast community of support waiting to embrace me.

Vulnerability also allowed me to connect with my baby on a deeper level. As I held my little one and whispered my hopes and dreams, my fears and worries, I felt a profound sense of closeness. I realised that it was through vulnerability that I could truly bond with my child, allowing them to see the real me, flaws and all. I am hereby setting the example to unapologetically embrace who you are at the core.

As the days turned into weeks and the weeks into months, I began to embrace vulnerability as a source of empowerment. I learned and am learning to forgive myself for my imperfections, to be kind to myself when I made mistakes, and to trust my instincts as a mother. I discovered that by opening up and sharing my journey, I could offer support to other new moms who might be struggling with their own vulnerability.

Motherhood is a journey of vulnerability, a path filled with moments of fear, doubt, and uncertainty. But it is also a journey of immense love, joy, and growth. Embracing vulnerability has allowed me to fully experience the beauty of motherhood, to connect with my baby in profound ways, and to build a network of support that I cherish every day.

So, to all the new moms out there, I encourage you to embrace your vulnerability. It is not a sign of weakness but a testament to your strength. It is through vulnerability that we find our true selves, connect with our children, and build the village of support we all need. In vulnerability, we discover the extraordinary power of motherhood.

Some steps I have come to implement daily (perhaps they can help you?)

**Step 1: Acknowledge Your Feelings**

The moment I held my baby for the first time, I felt a tsunami of emotions crash over me. While immense joy was part of it, so were fear, anxiety, and self-doubt. I was overwhelmed by the responsibilities that came with motherhood and the reality that I had no manual or all-encompassing wisdom.

**Step 2: Share Your Fears and Anxieties**

Our shared vulnerability deepened our connection, providing mutual support.

**Step 3: Seek Support**

One of the most important steps I took was reaching out to other new moms, joining (more) support groups, and talking to experienced parents. By admitting my struggles, I discovered a sisterhood eager to share their knowledge and offer a helping hand. I learned that vulnerability is not a solitary path; it's a journey shared with others.

**Step 4: Practice Self-Compassion**

Embracing vulnerability wasn't just about sharing with others; it was also about being kind to myself. I realised that I didn't have to be a perfect mom. I could make mistakes, learn from them, and grow. Self-compassion became my guiding principle. Sometimes "good enough" is great. Sometimes trash tv is great.

**Step 5: Bond Through Vulnerability**

Vulnerability allowed me to connect with my child on a profound level. Through authenticity, I invited my little one into my world, teaching them that it's okay to be human and vulnerable.

**The Benefits of Vulnerability**

Now, let's explore the remarkable benefits of embracing vulnerability as a new mom:

1. **Deeper Connections**: By opening up to your partner and others, you forge stronger, more meaningful relationships. You find solace in the understanding that you're not alone in your journey.

2. **Enhanced Self-Growth**: Vulnerability pushes you out of your comfort zone, helping you grow as a person. It allows you to confront your fears and insecurities, ultimately making you a more resilient individual.

3. **Emotional Resilience**: The ability to acknowledge and express your feelings fosters emotional resilience. You become better equipped to handle the ups and downs of motherhood.

4. **Stronger Bond with Your Child**: Vulnerability paves the way for genuine connection with your child. It teaches them that it's okay to express their emotions and seek help when needed.

5. **Supportive Community**: Embracing vulnerability introduces you to a supportive community of fellow parents who share your joys and challenges. These connections become an invaluable resource throughout your parenting journey.

In conclusion, motherhood is a journey of vulnerability that empowers us in ways we never imagined. By acknowledging our feelings, sharing our fears, seeking support, practicing self-compassion, and bonding through vulnerability, we not only become better mothers but also better individuals. Embracing vulnerability doesn't make us weak; it makes us stronger, more authentic, and deeply connected with the beautiful chaos of motherhood.

So, to all the new moms out there, may you find the strength in vulnerability and the joy in the journey of motherhood.

xoxo
